4 Meet Greater RDG 2022

“We get messages all the time about how much the customers appreciate that these products come from two curly girls who understand the struggle, know what it takes to make quality products like these and have gone through the trauma part, too.”

GROW&LOCATE

“We had our own curly hair struggles, and we had a transformation that inspired us to embrace our natural hair. Because of that transformation, we decided that we wanted to create our own curly hair products that were clean, safe and that would perform beyond synthetics,” said VaronaVarona-CornielCorniel.

Varona-Corniel and Cancelmo were born in the Dominican Republic, which has had a huge impact on the way they run their business, and who they honor while doing it. They make sure to include everything in Spanish and English, making their business accessible to a larger group of customers.

and Cancelmo founded the business in 2018 with hopes of officially launching in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic delayed its opening to March 2021. In just a year and a half, they have made some significant headway. So far, DN Organics has two products for sale on its website, a styling gel and a leave-in cream, with hopes to add shampoos and conditioners to this line of products. Even with just two products, the company has gained a loyal group of customers.

Growing up, Varona-Corniel and Cancelmo were taught that curly hair was unruly, unprofessional and ugly. Their hair was damaged from years of hot straighteners, chemical treatments and other harmful processes to make their hair

By Rachel Kovach, Communications & Marketing Intern, GRCA Sisters Cory Dahlia Varona-Corniel and Nicol Varona Cancelmo, inspired by their curly hair struggles, created DN Organics to bring clean and safe hair-care products to those who shared their struggles.

“Westraight.grew up with the mentality that our curly hair was ugly, and that we were not beautiful if we embraced it,” said Cancelmo.

CurlFRIENDS Sisters founded all-natural, hair-care business in Greater Reading

Meet Greater RDG 2022 5

“As adults, we embraced our curls, so we want to not just share with other women who might be going through the same journey, but also start to bring this to younger generations,” said Varona-Corniel. “They don’t have to hide who they are. They can freely embrace who they were born to be and to feel beautiful.”

In addition to expanding the product line, the sisters are also hoping to expand the company. As of now, it is just the two of them running DN Organics with the help of their families and some freelancers. Varona-Corniel and Canclemo both have families and work full-time jobs to support DN Organics.

“The goal is to hire a whole team to get people to help us with marketing, customer service and fulfillment,” said VaronaCorniel. “Our main goal is to one day have a warehouse in Reading to store our products and do fulfillment from here, but that will obviously be down the line.”

products such as parabens, sulfates, silicones, synthetic dyes or fragrances and mineral oils are not in any DN Organics products. Cancelmo and Varona-Corniel pride themselves in using science and nature to make the safest hair-care products for their customers that also yield great results. Some natural ingredients that they use include mango butter, carrot root extract, sunflower seed oil and hibiscus flower extract.

DN Organics has made so much progress. From just an idea and desire to help people to a successful business with a large following and loyal customers, Cancelmo and Varona-Corniel say they are, “so proud that our products are changing lives and helping people care for their curly hair.”

Jeff Owner/PresidentSchatz, “I feel confident that Tompkins will be with us in the future and help us grow even more,” says Jeff. “And that’s a good feeling.” | StrengthStability

The sisters decided to start their business in Greater Reading because this is home for them. They attended Reading High School and Penn State Berks, so it was the best and most logical place to start DN Organics. In addition, Berks LaunchBox, Powered by Penn State, an organization that supports entrepreneurship across diverse populations throughout Berks County, was instrumental for Cancelmo and Varona-Corniel in starting their business. According to 2020 Census data, nearly 70% of residents in the City of Reading identify as Latino and 22.5% across Berks County. The sisters are exceedingly proud to represent the Latino and women-owned entrepreneurial scene. The company also sets itself apart from others in the beauty industry by adhering to strict guidelines with the ingredients in its products. Harmful ingredients seen in other hair-care

In recent years, they have worked through the trauma this has caused, have healed their hair, and completely embraced themselves for who they are. Not only have they embraced their curls, but they are also inspiring the next generations to do the same.

Greater Reading’s resources bolsters

Suburban Testing Labs’ business Testing Labs’ services because they are required to protect public health and preserve the environment. Within this community role, Suburban Testing Labs’ overall mission “is to protect public health and preserve the environment by making sure drinking water is safe, there is no pollution and soil is not contaminated,” said Stump.

“The Greater Reading area has many unique strengths to attract people. One, it has a reasonable cost of living compared to surrounding areas. Also, Greater Reading has areas for arts and entertainment which employees can enjoy. In addition, we have some excellent school districts for families here,” said Sara Stump, Director of Sales and Marketing.

TESTING

The Greater Reading area is also great for a new, small business owner. The region has many resources that can help any entrepreneur thrive. Many of these resources are free and can help with tasks such as building a strong business

The family owned and operated company was founded in 1963 as a water treatment company. Government regulations of the ’70s and ’80s, such as the Clean Water Act, pushed the company to begin testing drinking water, wastewater, soils and solid materials for contamination. With this expansion, Suburban Testing Labs began to cater to a larger variety of customers including cities, towns, municipalities and engineering firms — all entities that needed Suburban the Waters

GROW&LOCATE

The company has seen tremendous growth in the past few years. In 2005, Suburban Testing Labs had 12 employees. Now it has nearly 100 employees. Also, its facility has grown five times in size. This has allowed for the growth of new customers, an expanded workforce and a wider geographic coverage area.

One reason for this expansion is Suburban Testing Labs’ location. Stump believes that the Greater Reading region is great for new people looking to start careers.

By Amish Jindal, Communications & Marketing Intern, GRCA Suburban Testing Labs owes much of its success to its location in Greater Reading. This area has provided the company with numerous opportunities that have helped it succeed.

“The workforce can live, work and play here,” Stump said.

Stump is proud of the company her employees and family have built in the Greater Reading area. In the future, Stump said she sees Suburban Testing Labs “growing in the Mid-Atlantic market. And continuing to be seen as a leader in providing high quality data to environmental decision makers.”

The financing enabled the company to begin PFAS (Per/ Polyfluoroalkyl substances) testing. PFAS chemicals have been used in consumer products, industrial processes and manufacturing since the 1940s. They have been shown to have harmful reproductive, developmental, and immunological side effects, and governments are just beginning to regulate them. Now, Suburban Testing Labs is an industry leader in PFAS testing as it is one of two facilities in Pennsylvania with testing capability.

Organizations such as the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA) offer support for all types of businesses. GRCA helped Suburban Testing Labs secure access to low-interest financing through the Pennsylvania Industrial Authority (PIDA) for growth projects.

the school taught only barbers. Now, it has expanded to cosmetology and aesthetics, also known as professional skincare. These innovative programs have made the school a larger player in the industry.

The school’s founder and CEO, George Ortiz, points to many factors leading to its growth — from an increase in demand for such services to a change in the educational landscape.

A significant factor for this uptick in students is that people are looking for a career change because of the COVID-19 “Peoplepandemic.are realizing you cannot have all your eggs in one basket. The skills we teach are great as a second job,” said Ortiz.

GROW&LOCATE

Furthermore, demand for the school’s education is high.

Above

The school left the old facility with 16 students, and now teaches over 90 students at a time. Through its various programs American Barber and Beauty Academy graduates 100 to 120 students each year.

“This year is fully enrolled, and people are booking in advance. We currently have a waiting list,” said Ortiz.

8 Meet Greater RDG 2022

By Amish Jindal Communications & Marketing Intern, GRCA American Barber and Beauty Academy has grown from its Previously, roots.

This rapid growth recently earned the school the No. 1 ranking in Category 2 for businesses with $250K+ in annual revenue for the past three years of the Business Excellence Awards from the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance.

A CUT American Barber and Beauty Academy gives students hands-on learning and real-world experience

The facility initially was just a barber school and was located at 110 Morgantown Road, Reading. Due to great success, the school expanded to a 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art education facility in July of 2020. This facility contains active classrooms for practical experience and opportunities for hands-on learning. The school offers discounted services to the public, giving students real-life interaction with clients.

While this demand and growth has been great for the school, Ortiz admits it has been difficult adapting to the volume of expansion.

In addition, the post-secondary educational landscape has changed. Individuals have realized that a four-year college degree is not necessary to be successful. The trades are now in demand and trade schools across the board have seen increases in enrollment.

“The scale of growth we have seen within a short time frame was challenging. Through this process, I wanted to keep our quality up to the highest standards. We overcame this problem by working through it as a team and trial and error,” said Ortiz. He also is proud of the successful business practices he has implemented at American Barber and Beauty Academy. “I found out I had to be a go getter. Nothing was going to come to be by itself. Also, I concentrated on being a servant leader. I realized you need to serve your needs by serving the needs of others first,” said Ortiz. These methods have allowed the school to gain a favorable reputation among members of the community.

“We are getting referrals from many of our successful graduates,” Ortiz said. The staff at American Barber and Beauty academy also is honored by the award. “It is extremely rewarding and shows the efforts of our team,” said Director Jennifer Crawl.

Ortiz is proud of the school he has built and the graduates it produces. Looking to the future Ortiz said, “We want to perfect what we do here, and make sure we never lose our quality.”

“When I stepped in, I was blown away by the atmosphere. The game is a mix between tennis, badminton and ping pong. The ball has circular holes in it, while the paddle is a little bigger than a table tennis paddle. The court is the same size as a double’s badminton court or roughly a third of the size of a tennis court. Pickleball can be played one-on-one or two-on-two. Because of the simplicity of the game, players of all ages and abilities can enjoy this fast-growing sport while choosing the intensity level that works best for them.

Greater Reading embraces America’s fastest growing sport

Have you heard of pickleball? It is no surprise if you haven’t as the sport recently started becoming popular. Pickleball currently is America’s fastest growing sport that grew to 4.8 million players in the United States in 2021, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. Pickleball is a sport for all ages and abilities with the current average age around 38 years old and the fastest growing segment of players under 24 years old.

There are several locations throughout the Greater Reading area that have pickleball courts and more are in the planning stages. In fact, there are even some indoor courts as well.

West Reading boasts 10 relatively new pickleball courts that officially opened in July, 2021. This renovated site previously had four aging tennis courts on it.

According to Kate Martinez, Marketing & Graphic Design Manager at Fromuth, the funding for this project came from Shields and his wife, Meg. PickleIN A

In addition to the accessibility and the ease of playing this game, there is also a social aspect and sense of community with players as well.

"We had four unused courts, and we have a bunch of tennis courts next door in Wyomissing," said Pat Shields, owner, and CEO of Fromuth Racquet Sports.

“The goal of this was to take these underused courts and build something that is going to bring people to the community. The courts are free and open to the public and the goal has always been inclusivity and open to everyone,” said Martinez. The idea is to be family friendly and a place to come learn and have fun. In addition to the new pickleball courts, the basketball courts also were renovated.

“It’s accessible. You don’t need a racket-sport background and can pick it up quickly. It has given people a new competitive feeling. You can actively see yourself getting better each time you play. And with people coming out of Covid, it was a way to be social and connect with others. The pickleball community is very welcoming and offers newcomers introductions and guidance to the fundamentals of the game,” said Keith.

The minimum equipment needed to get started would be a basic racket and balls for about $50. However, Keith also recommends court shoes, since running shoes are designed to go north/south whereas in pickleball your movement will be more east/west. With increased competitiveness and intensity, it’s easy to turn an ankle without the proper shoes. Ready to play? Those new to the game may check out Fromuth’s demo program at fromuthpickleball.com. Or check out westreadingpickleball.com for upcoming events and ways to get involved.

The West Reading Pickleball Association oversees the courts. Its volunteers not only promote activities to foster the game, but also take care of the upkeep of the facility. The association started offering clinics and lessons for people that want to learn more about the game. Ticketed events such as the Fromuth Pickleball Classic go towards the continued upkeep and maintenance of the courts in hopes that the pickleball association can be self-sustaining.

Bobby Keith, Pickleball Brand Manager at Fromuth, said it’s not surprising the sport has grown in popularity.

Also, during this time, the nearby Lauer's Park Elementary reached out to GoggleWorks for help maintaining its robust student gardens, which had fallen into disrepair due to pandemic restrictions on volunteers. A coalition of stakeholders and a multi-year grant from the Wyomissing Foundation helped establish The GoggleWorks Gardens at Lauer's Park, a partnership between the school, art center and local and national partners including Rodale Institute and Longwood Gardens. Now, GoggleWorks is developing outdoor portions of its campus to expand these outdoor programs and serve thousands more tourists and city residents with a dynamic, public art park.

GoggleWorks is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and admission and parking are always free. The co-founders — Marlin Miller, the late Albert Boscov, and the late Irv Cohen — were adamant about making high-quality art and education programs as accessible to as many as possible, now totaling some 250,000 visitors each year!

In addition to visitors, the art center is committed to serving the significant needs of artists, students and families in the region through a host of scholarships, outreach programs, art therapy programs, career development, residencies and fellowships. Since 2020, the art center turned its mission further outward, activating outdoor public spaces through a variety of placemaking programs.

Middle age seemed like a good time to be trying something totally new, like fly-fishing. I was one of the millions who saw the film, “A River Runs Through It” and came away with the feeling, “I’d like to try that.” So, I decided to schedule my own private lesson with an instructor from a local shop, Tulpehocken Creek Outfitters (TCO) in West Lawn.

WORK&LIVE

By Cindy Ross, Pennsylvania’s Americana Region

“You want to first take a few minutes and watch the water, see if there are insects rising or hatching, causing the fish to dimple the surface for a meal. When you fly fish, you want to imitate what the fish are eating on this particular day,” Tony says.

Fly fishing is a sport locals love Do you want to learn how to fly fish? Or are you already an avid fly fisherman? Tulpehocken Creek Outfitters (TCO) Fly Shop has one of four locations in Greater Reading. TCO is the largest, most complete fly-fishing outfitter on the East Coast also offering events and education. Call, e-mail or visit www.tcoflyfishing.com for a complete listing of store hours and its calendar of events and education.

“Only check rocks that you’re sure are covered with water year-round, even in dry spells, for some stages of an insects’ life dictates that it must be submerged for 365 days,” he says. He fingers a tiny pebble covered object off the bottom and flicks the stones away until a caddis larva is revealed. The insect excretes a sticky substance that makes these tiny pebbles adhere to it. Then Tony takes his box of “patterns” and matches the insect to the artificial lure. The tied flies are more exaggerated in color etc, but they have to attract fish and hold up under the water.

Tony, the store owner and instructor, shows me how to tie beginner knots with heavy, bright red line.

Tony spots only one caddis fly emerge and so he goes to a submerged rock and lifts it out of the water to show me the underside.

“All the rest is learning how to ‘present’ the fly, how to perfect your aim and deliver your pattern exactly the way a real fly would land,” he says. This afternoon, the wind is blowing refreshingly, the flowing water sounds like music, and my mind is empty of every day cares and worries as I cast my fly line through the air. I know there is a lot left to learn, but after only one day on the river, I have found a new love.

After I select a pattern and tie it on myself, Tony examines the river and points out places that a fish could possibly hide, waiting for a meal being carried on the current Tony takes my arm and demonstrates how the casting motion should feel and in no time at all, I am whipping that line around like a natural. A fly-fishing rod is very long and flexible and is built to transfer energy to the PVC rubberized hollow line. Fly fishing line is specially designed to float and fly because it is a thin, long, tubular line rubberized with glass bubbles inside. It moves so incredibly graceful that I find myself enjoying just this simple beautiful motion. Tony shows me how to “mend” the line or flip it upstream, so the fly goes down first.

LearningON THE FLY

“Fly fishing is more of an art than other types of fishing. You have to figure out what is hatching, what insects live on that particular stream. Live bait is never used in fly-fishing, but all types of bugs and insects made from feathers and wool and thread and beads,” Tony says.

The shop boasts room after room of fly-fishing goodies, and I marvel at the close to 200 rods and over 2,000 tiny compartments with individual flies. The lesson begins with a cruise around the shop to learn about gear and what I need to get started.

“Make me do everything myself, Tony. I want to go out on that river and know what I’m doing,” I say. I learn how to tie the tippet to the line, the leader to the tippet and the fly to the leader as Tony shares what he loves about the sport and what makes it so fascinating and suitable for a lifetime of enjoyment.

The second part of my lesson includes an on-stream fishing experience, which brings us to the Tulpehocken Creek.

What do wish others knew about living in Greater Reading that you’ve discovered? I am always interested in regions where there is a commitment to community engagement. I found in Greater Reading people, businesses, and organizations who give their time, talent, and resources to address the issues impacting our community. There is also a commitment to collaborate to make the community stronger for everyone. Anything you wished you knew sooner about the area? I came to Greater Reading in the middle of COVID, so it was difficult to visit or experience a lot of what the region has to offer. Tell us your favorite thing about living and/or working in Greater Reading. I love the farmer's markets. It helps with my mission of healthy eating. Why did you choose to move here and stay? I moved from Michigan to Pennsylvania to be the chancellor of Penn State University Berks. What attracted me to Berks is its passion for being a learningcentered college. I wanted to be at a college that cared not only about the students but is also an active community member. I have stayed because at Berks, I get to participate with organizations that are working to educate, address social and economic issues, and assist Greater Reading in retaining and recruiting talent. What is your favorite, local restaurant? Franklyn’s Breakfast Burgers and Shakes. They have great food, and the staff is very welcoming.

What do you wish others knew about living in Greater Reading that you’ve discovered?

If you are not from Greater Reading, why did you choose to move here and stay? I am not from Greater Reading, but my husband is. We originally decided to live here because of his family and friends in the area. Since then, we have built such a life here, with the people and the location, I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Our home is our little oasis and provides us a calm and relaxing place to live and work. What is your favorite, local restaurant?

Location drives where people want to live, work and grow a business. We know Greater Reading has a great northeast United States location, but there is a bigger story to tell than a place on a map. This diverse base of growing companies provides stability to the local economy. The continued stability of the area’s largest industry sector, manufacturing, is evidenced in the industry’s large contribution to the County’s GDP at over $4.7 B.

Using her background in education and marketing, Barrett uses educational material she wrote to engage kids that come to Colebrookdale on field trips. Barrett said she once felt disconnected from history because she could never relate to it, but being a part of Colebrookdale, she discovered how many women and people of color were instrumental in the history of our country and the railroad. She is now passing on her wealth of information to the kids that visit the Colebrookdale Railroad.

Greater Reading organizations offer education, fun

There is a new learning opportunity being offered at the Colebrookdale Railroad. A program is being created to allow people with autism and an interest in trains to work under the supervision of skilled volunteers.

RICH IN

The Colebrookdale Railroad was formed as a non-profit organization in 2012 and is rich in history. The line that Colebrookdale is on is more than 150 years old. The organization is reliant on its dedicated and skilled volunteers that help build and maintain the railroad and trains, as well as educate the many people who come to visit the railroad.

“We are so lucky to have a massive volume of support and volunteers who give, and give, and give to the railroad,” said Michele Barrett, Assistant Director of Colebrookdale Railroad, “The volunteers quite literally laid down new tracks. They pulled out the old and installed the new track all by hand to bring it up to code.”

The Colebrookdale Railroad, Berks Nature and the Science Research Institute at Albright College are just a few of the organizations that make this community a great place to live and grow.

Culture

The Greater Reading area is rich with cultural amenities that enhance the lives of the people who live here and participate in these educational and fun opportunities.

These public preserves include Angelica Creek Park, Bob’s Woods at the Earl Poole Sanctuary and the Neversink Mountain Preserve and Community Forest. Since the organization rebranded itself from the Berks County Conservancy to Berks Nature in 2016, Berks Nature has helped preserve nearly 370 acres of land per year. As of 2021, Berks Nature ranks 9th out of 68 land trusts in Pennsylvania in terms of most acres protected under conservation easements.

As interest in the program grew, it became clear that SRI needed to move to an institution of higher education, and Albright was the perfect fit. Now that SRI is at a higher education institute, college-level students now get the opportunity to partake in hands-on learning and mentor or intern with SRI.

The Science Research Institute (SRI) at Albright College empowers young people to innovate with a supportive system that encourages perseverance, connection and creativity.

Berks Nature owns 433 acres of land in Berks County made up of three public nature preserves and five private preserves. Each public preserve is meant to not only support wildlife habitat and ecological resiliency, but also to create safe spaces for people of all ages to enjoy the great outdoors.

“The cornerstone of Berks Nature’s thinking is simple: Nature is essential to our quality of life. It is this value that guides our local action to protect, restore and maintain the natural assets of Berks County for all to enjoy,” said Regan MollDohm, Director of Communications at Berks Nature.

The SRI’s goal is to “...bridge the gap for historically underserved populations to have access to state-of-theart equipment and modern, hands-on experiences in the jobs of the future,” said Ellen Albright, Director of Strategic Partnerships for Pre-College + Summer Programs at SRI.

The Science Research Institute at Albright offers an abundance of programs for students of all ages. They bring their hands-on science education into elementary school classrooms, they offer after school programs for grades 5 to 12, and dual enrollment for grades 11 and 12. Thanks to all the resources and courses that SRI provides, 10 participating high school students currently have pending or provisional patents for their Science Research Institute projects.

Adelle Schade is the founder of the Science Research Institute, which originated at Conrad Weiser School District.

Year-round K-12 offerings are poised to inspire an entire generation to excel in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) disciplines through powerful methodology and a unique, student-driven approach.

SCIENCE RESEARCH INSTITUTE AT ALBRIGHT

Berks Nature has preserved over 11,000 acres of land in Berks County over the last 47 years. In addition to protecting the land, Berks Nature also manages four volunteer-driven watershed associations, participates in stream, forest, and meadow restoration projects, offers an expansive array of environmental education opportunities from a summer EcoCamp to public programs to a fully licensed Nature Preschool, and works with farmers to install conservation measures and technology.
